What is a TIE in Spain for British?
A TIE in Spain “Tarjeta de identificación de Extranjeros” in Spanish or Foreigner’s Identity card. Is a legal document that proves your permission to live in Spain for all foreigners with no European passport. The TIE contains your NIE number, your photo, personal details, fingerprint and expired date.
Who needs a Spanish TIE?
All foreigners with no European passport (including British) that want to live in Spain for more than 3 months a year need a TIE.
If you are British there are differents ways to get the TIE in Spain.
The Withdrawal Agreement protects United Kingdom nationals residing in Spain at the end of the transition period, as well as their third-country relatives, being members of the family before the end of the transition period (except for future children).
What are the advantages for British of get the TIE now?
Both Brexit and the Withdrawal Agreement make it necessary to know which UK nationals reside in Spain before the end of the transition period and which ones arrive after that date.
This is because the former, those who reside in Spain before 31 December 2020, will have the rights of residence, free movement and social security recognised by the Withdrawal Agreement. While those who arrive after that date will have different rights, either those that recognise the future relationship between the EU and the United Kingdom, or, in its absence, those recognised by Spanish law.

I have the Spanish Residency, can I still reside in Spain?
Yes, you can continue to reside in Spain. In addition, you and your family members may apply as from 6 July 2020 for the issuance of a residence document explicitly mentioning your status as a beneficiary of the Withdrawal Agreement, which will facilitate both administrative formalities and the crossing of the external border.
The Withdrawal Agreement protects the rights of EU citizens and British nationals, as well as their respective relatives, to continue to live, work or study as they do today and under the same essential conditions as under Union law.
Do I need to apply for the TIE?
UK nationals will not have to ask for a new residence status as a condition for legal residence. If you have the Spanish green residency, at the moment, you don’t need to apply for the new one.
But if you want to do it, the process is so simple and fast. You don’t have to prove any income. Applications for the replacement of the green card already in your possession may be raised at any time, including once the transition period is over.
How do I get the TIE in Spain for British?
In order to obtain the residence document, you must request a prior appointment and submit your application personally to the police establishments. The certificate will be replaced by the new residence document that will be given to you within the time indicated by the office that processed the card.
Where can I renew the residence document?
Spain Foreigner Identity Card (TIE) documents that identify you as a beneficiary of the Withdrawal Agreement may be renewed before the police units authorised to do so when they have expired.
You can see all the Police Station where you can apply for a TIE on the Valencia community. In Alicante province, at the moment, you can only apply at Alicante City Police Station as well as in Murcia. We are sure this would change in some months.

When should I renew the residence document or TIE?
If you have the Green card, it is not necesary to get the TIE now. Once you get the TIE, it has an expired date.
If your Identification card has an expired date it must be renewed 30 days before the document expires or within 90 days of the expiry date of the Agreement.
How long can I renew it?
The first card must renew it in 5 years. In cases where a temporary residence document is in possession, a residence document shall be issued for 10 years, automatically renewable every 10 years, and the term “Permanent” shall be entered in the field corresponding to the Permission Type.
Why does the TIE has and expired date?
The green residency doesn’t have an expired date because it doesn’t have pictures. Now the TIE has a picture, and as you might know, the faces change. That is the main reason why it has an expired date.
Also, because your residency situation can change in Spain. And if you are no longer living in Spain and you don’t renew it, you will lose your Residency status.
Is it necessary for me to prove my income?
Proof of sufficient income will only be required if you do not have a previous registration certificate and do not perform a professional or work activity in Spain.

What happens if I apply for TIE after BREXIT 1 January 2021?
Unless covered by the subjective scope of the Withdrawal Agreement , United Kingdom nationals entering Spain after 1 January 2021 shall be considered as third-country nationals.
This is a long and difficult process. If you have the option to apply before the end of the year, it will be faster and easier.
Can I continue to reside in Spain?
Yes, but in order to facilitate administrative arrangements and border crossings and your recognition as a beneficiary of the Withdrawal Agreement, it is appropriate that you are in possession of the TIE document.
How do I get the Spanish TIE for British?
In order to obtain the residence document, you may have access to the new procedure established for this purpose by personally presenting the application, you or your representative, at the Immigration Office of the province (Oficina de Extranjería) in which you reside, or electronically.

Among other requirements, you must prove that you resided in Spain before the end of the transition period. This will be more important if your application is submitted after the transition period after 1 January 2020.
Process to apply for it, with no Residency card.
- You shall apply for the residence document at the Immigration Office of the province (Oficina de Extranjería) where you reside. You must obtain a prior appointment. Go to online appointments→ choose Provincia → Trámite para la documentación de Nacionales de Reino Unido (Brexit) → click “continuar” → Add your personal details and choose an appointment.
- You go to the appointment and they will give you a proof of the application, which will be sufficient to demonstrate your regular stay status until the delivery of the residence document.
- Once granted you must request its dispatch to the appropriate police unit. This procedure is face-to-face and personal. You must obtain a prior appointment. Go to online appointments →choose Provincia →Choose Policia Exp Tarjeta asociada al Acuerdo de retirada ciudadanos británicos y sus familiares.
- Once the document has been issued, you must present your valid and current passport to collect it

Should I request it within a maximum period of time?
The deadline for submitting the application will be 3 months from your arrival in Spain.
How long will it take to get the residence document?
They normally send you the notification in 1month, but the deadline for deciding on your concession is three months.
Can another person file the residence document application in my place?
Requests to Immigration offices may be made by a duly accredited representative. Must be a power of Auttorney in Spanish legalized and notarized.
