What is the difference between a NIE and a TIE?
The NIE and the TIE are related, but they are not the same thing.
Your NIE, Número de Identidad de Extranjero, is your personal identification number as a foreigner in Spain. It is used to identify you in Spanish administrative procedures.
The TIE, Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, is the physical card that documents the administrative status of foreign nationals who are required to hold one. Your NIE appears on your TIE, but having an NIE does not automatically mean that you have a TIE or that you are resident in Spain.

Who needs a TIE card in Spain?
A TIE is generally relevant to foreign nationals who have a residence authorisation or immigration status in Spain that requires them to obtain the physical card.
You may need to apply for a TIE if:
